Firedragon Raceway

(new updates at the bottom of the page)

Here are some pics of the new slot car track. Track was started on Monday 11th July 2005. Bear in mind that I've never done this before, and I'm making up the techniques as I go along. I've hand-made the jigs you might see in the photos. I've had the design in my head and then on paper for about 12 months, and, although there are going to be a couple of places that will be a bit difficult to marshal, I have tried to minimise this and still get a lot of track in.

Today is Thursday 14th and I had a rest day. More pics as I do more work.

2 weeks later (22/07/2005), and it's starting to take shape.

It's about 4.8 by 3 metres and has a lane length of 27 metres. Still got a long way to go and it will take some time, but I have broken the back of the main tasks. All going well, it should be up and running in a couple of months.

Here's some snaps taken on Tuesday 9th August. They're not too clear but they give you an idea of what the track looks like now it's on legs. I've been concentrating on getting the legs done and finishing the routing. Next is the filling and sanding. Considering I can only work on the track one day a week and maybe 2 evenings, I think I'm doing well.

Tale of woe...

My son and wife race 1/10 radio controlled touring cars, and I am the pit crew for both drivers. Racing takes place on Sundays and I seem to be flat out keeping the cars running at the moment. This of course, means even less time to work on the track, so progress has been very slow over the last couple of weeks. (that's my excuse, anyway)

26th September

I've spent the last two days working on the track and have a few pictures of the results. The whole thing now has a coat of primer, and some parts have the first of 2 topcoats of blackboard paint.

It looks like it's going to be a really grippy surface, and it might take a few laps to rubber in. I'm a fan of hanging the tail out and I think that it won't take me long to get some rubber laid!

2nd October

I've spent all day today working on the track and I've really surprised myself. I have three lanes taped and I've checked them with a couple of different cars by touching the leads to the tape on the straight and driving using the on-off throttle method. I really have a sense of achievement today. I also want to mention the poor souls in Bali. This tragedy will not prevent us from going there in 3 week's time and supporting the good people of Bali. 'Nuff said

12th March 2006 - It's been a while....

It's been a long time since I have updated, and, in reality I haven't done a heck of a lot to the track. Big changes are now afoot, though. I have retired as 'pit bitch' for both my son and my wife's R/C cars and I have decided that I'm going to finish this track.

Here's the latest pics. Not a lot of progress, I know. There will be a lot from now on though.
